I often ask myself the same question. And I’m not even talking about 10 years from now; uncertainty surrounds even the next five years. While this uncertainty can be unsettling, not all indicators are pessimistic. Did you know that artificial intelligence skills can increase employability by up to 25%? (PwC). The thing is, in an increasingly digital world, employment and growth opportunities are directly tied to new technologies. But there’s a big problem. There are still 2.6 billion people without internet access. Faced with such inequality, how can we ensure more people have access to these opportunities?
Digital Economy for Everyone
We know it, but we often ignore it. It’s impossible to think about inclusion opportunities if we don’t urgently address the digital divide. Studies show that jobs of the future, especially those requiring digital skills, are growing three times faster than traditional jobs (McKinsey, 2022). However, in disadvantaged regions like Latin America, only a small fraction of the population has the skills needed to participate in this change. I don’t even need to add more numbers to illustrate how quickly the world has been changing over the last three years. Your own experiences and observations likely confirm that these initiatives can’t wait.
To bridge this gap, we need to focus on three key areas:
1. Greenskilling and Sustainability:Training the workforce in sustainable practices is essential for transitioning to greener economic models. According to the Inter-American Development Bank, the green economy could create up to 15 million new jobs in Latin America and the Caribbean. (Social Digital)
2. Artificial Intelligence Literacy:Understanding and leveraging AI is essential in today’s job market. AI literacy in Latin America is lower compared to other regions, limiting innovation and competitiveness. (World Bank Blogs)This concern motivated us to develop programs like Reskilling Latam (a joint effort by Eidos and Microsoft that has already reached over 4 million people) and EsencIA (the latest initiative by Eidos and Google).
3. Opportunities for Companies Investing in the Region:Companies that invest in training their workforce in these areas not only improve their competitiveness but also contribute to the region’s sustainable development, creating an ecosystem conducive to innovation and economic growth.
